Clinics & Services

• Treatment Room - available during normal surgery hours Monday to Friday.  The practice operates an appointment system for the treatment room.  Please contact reception to make an appointment.

• Minor Surgery - by appointment with the doctor.

• Child Health Clinic - your health visitor and doctor check your child's health and development at eight weeks and four years. The first immunisations and the pre-school booster are usually given at this clinic.

• Immunisation Clinics - immunisation/assessment clinic every Tuesday from 14:00 – 16:00. Four year old assessment/vaccination clinic on the second Thursday of each month 14.00 - 16.00.

• Diabetic Clinic - by appointment with the practice nurse.

• Asthma Clinic - by appointment with the practice nurse.

• COPD Clinic - by appointment with the practice nurse.

• Well-Woman Clinic - We encourage women between 25 and 65 to attend for discussion regarding lifestyle, cervical smear test and, if required, breast examination. Please attend when you receive an appointment.

• Flu Vaccine Clinic - October/November/December - notices will be displayed in the surgery. Vaccination given by the treatment room nurse/practice nurse. This vaccine is particularly recommended for patients with heart, lung or kidney problems, diabetics and the elderly as well as pregnant women.

• Smoking Cessation Clinic - by appointment with the practice nurse.

• Weight Reduction Clinic - by appointment with the practice nurse. Consultation is conducted on a one-to-one basis.

Travel Vaccinations

 Travel Vaccines and Malaria Prevention

Due to NHS pressures and ever changing immunisation schedules, the practice will no longer deal with requests for travel vaccines and malaria prevention. For improved patient safety and better holistic care, we feel this service is best delivered by a specialist travel clinic.

We strongly advise you to check your requirements at least three months before travel (see local providers below), to ensure optimal immunity. It is your responsibility to ascertain which vaccinations (and, if relevant, anti-malaria tablets) you need, and also to inform yourself fully of recommended safe travel precautions.

Draperstown Surgery is able to prescribe and administer the following vaccinations on the NHS:

• Diphtheria, tetanus & polio (combined)
• Hepatitis A and/or typhoid (separate or combined)
• Cholera (medication is also available on the NHS, but is not commonly required)

However all recommendations must come in writing from a recognised travel clinic.

The following common travel vaccines are not available on the NHS and cannot be administered by the practice (most travel clinics will be able to administer these):

• Yellow fever
• Rabies
• Japanese encephalitis
• Hepatitis B
• Tick borne encephalitis
• Meningoccoccal

Travel clinics will also be able to provide you with a private prescription for anti-malarial tablets if required.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

• Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
• Insurance claim forms
• Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
• Private sick notes
• Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
 

When you have had a positive pregnancy test you can self-refer to receive a booking appointment with the Maternity Unit of your choice. Maternity units within the Northern Trust are based at Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital, Coleraine. Maternity units within the Western trust are based at Altnagelvin Hospital and the South West Acute Hospital.

Podiatrists have a key role to play in helping people maintain their health and social wellbeing and live independently within their own community. This is especially so for patients with complex medical conditions such as diabetes. Podiatrists provide a service to people from all age groups and users can self refer or be referred by GP’s or other health care professionals.
